Three new publications from HERON
HERON, in conjunction with Pfizer and Biogen Idec, has recently published three key papers in leading journals; a systematic review update in European Urology and two economic evaluations in Pharmacoeconomics.HERON and Pfizer in conjunction with Prof Chris Chapple of Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Trust and Dr Vik Khullar of Imperial College have published the results of the largest systematic review conducted to date on the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of antimuscarinic treatments for overactive bladder. This comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis is an update of a review performed in 2005. From 12,781 reviewed citations, 83 studies were included in the review update, compared to 56 studies previously. This reflects the sizeable amount of newly published research in this field and the inclusion of a newly licensed antimuscarinic agent.
Also in conjunction with Pfizer, HERON have published a cost-utility analysis of varenicline versus existing smoking cessation strategies using the benefits of smoking cessation on outcomes (BENESCO) simulation model in a population of US adult smokers. Varenicline was found to be cost effective, dominating bupropion, nicotine replacement therapy and unaided quitting as a smoking cessation strategy.
Following work with Biogen Idec, HERON have published cost-effectiveness analyses of natalizumab (Tysabri®) compared with other disease-modifying therapies for people with highly active relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (HARRMS) in the UK. This economic evaluation was developed to to support a reimbursement application for natalizumab submitted to the UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). Tysabri® gained approval from NICE in July 2007 following an earlier review and analysis of the evidence prepared by HERON Evidence Development Ltd.
